In an article entitled "We shall overcome . . . Liberals, " writer Micheal Goldberg reviews a Philadelphia political rally held by religious right leaders who have openly entered into the political struggle to confirm Samuel Alito. The so-called Justice Sunday appropriated the rhetoric of the civil rights movement for its drive to gain control over the federal judiciary.
Meanwhile liberals wonder whether or not the IRS will investigate us if we mention that Jesus was a pacifist and would object to war stance of both Bush and Kerry. The use of some African American clergy for right wing rallies will not change the democratic, pro-civil rights orientation of African Americans, but it will lend legitimacy to the political right. In Illinois, our Democratic Gov is handing over $1 million of State funds, no strings attached, to African American clergy to rebuild a church.
You can bet our Governor will attach more behind the scene strings to these clergymen than Bush attaches to Lusk.
We also have Congressmen Rush, who is an ordained Preacher of his own, and uses the Church for his own efforts...
..so this goes both ways. And I think a bit less cynically with Rev Lusk and Bush.
