Breakdown of right relations at Closing Ceremony GA 2005

| | Comments (0)

Beginning to think about controversy at Monday night closing ceremony, General Assembly in Fort Worth, Texas.

The circumstances of breakdown of right relations that happened during the closing ceremonies at General Assembly has been the topic of much conversation on web sites.  Much of the controversy involves competing definitions  of racism.  Is racism a bad attitude.  Or is racism a historical legacy that is built into our institutions and habits of response to one another.

Some argue that "youth" were being disrespectful, and adults were duty bound to discipline them.  I argue that these African descent male youth had experienced White Power as disrespecting them and sought to make a statement, but experienced the scripted closing ceremony and the ushers officious guidance oppressive in the moment.  The reaction was to the situation, "the racism" was the total experience.
